Alert neighbour saves home from blaze

2010-08-18 00:00

QUICK thinking and fast action from a Woodhouse Road resident saved her neighbour’s home yesterday and possibly even the life of her neighbour’s child, who was sleeping, unaware that the garage was ablaze.

The fire was well alight on top of the roof of the garage when Mano Moodley, in her house next door, heard a loud crackling sound outside at about 11am.

She first thought the noise was coming from the street.

However, when she went outside to investigate she found that the fire was at the home of her neighbour, Nuncoomar Mahadeo.

Mahadeo’s 13-year-old daughter was fast asleep, and did not hear the commotion caused by the fire.

By then the garage was covered in black smoke.

“I became alarmed, and I shouted and shouted many times at the child inside the [Mahadeo] house, but no one came out.

“I then remembered that I have the phone number of their family members, whom I called to inform about the fire.

“Soon after, I called the fire department,” said Moodley.

Mahadeo (58), a school bus driver, said he was busy at work when he received a call about the fire.

Luckily his Nissan Sentra was saved from the fire because it was parked in the front of the garage.

“We had left our 13-year-old alone in the house when we left for work in the morning. I rushed back home as soon as I got the call,” Mahadeo said.

The whole roof of the garage was damaged.

He also lost a bicycle, clothes, paint and other items which he had kept in the garage. The girl was awoken and was found to be unharmed.

Msunduzi Municipality firefighters rushed to the scene and managed to put out the fire before it spread to the main house

No injuries were reported as a result of the fire.
