Alien encounter on the N3?

2009-05-01 00:00

Did a Pietermaritzburg businessman really see the naked body of an injured and possibly dead alien while travelling between Heidelberg and Vosloorus recently?

That’s a mystery that may never be answered.

The 41-year-old man is still puzzling over the incident, which has left him and his wife with a lingering sense of unease.

While driving from Pietermaritzburg past Heidelberg on his way to Johannesburg on the morning of April 3, investment consultant Grant Brann saw a sight he still cannot explain.

He told The Witness it was around 7 am, just after he had pulled out of a petrol station on the N3, when he spotted a figure lying dead on the centre median, prone, its chin on the road.

The figure, which he described as “not quite human”, appeared to be covered with a see-through sheath, like an embryonic sac, “or like the substance they encase boerewors in”.

“The body was blueish-white, but this could have been from the cold.” He later told his wife that the form looked “hypothermic and had dead eyes”.

The shocked Brann did not stop his car, but described how he slowed down, thinking the figure was some kind of roadkill.

“I got the shock of my life. The face was looking at me. It was nothing I could really relate to.”

Looking in his rear-view mirror, Brann registered the horror on the face of the driver behind him as she too saw the naked and hairless body of the “alien-like and embryonic” form, about the size of a young teenager.

He described the face as having prominent eyes fixed in a death stare below eye ridges with no eyebrows, not much of a nose, an open oval mouth and high cheekbones.

Brann got the impression the form was female from the high cheekbones. He also thought the creature’s back may have been broken from the awkward angle the neck took.

Brann said he now regrets not having pulled over. He insists the body was neither human nor an earthly animal, nor was it a doll or a mannequin.

The ghoulish sight was also not a trick of the light.

When he later told his wife, Caroline, about the incident, he asked her not to tell anyone. But the following day, he asked her to report the incident to the police at Heidelberg and ask them if they had any explanation.

He was hoping authorities could shed light on the incident, but the couple have had no feedback from the police.

The encounter had “a very macabre quality and it was a very chilling, disturbing sight”, said Caroline Brann.

Brann said: “My gut feel is that it was an alien form … I travel a lot, but I have never seen anything like this before.”

The Witness tried unsuccessfully to get police in the Heidelberg and Vosloorus area to comment.
