All Stars: Snoop Lion Preaches about ‘herb from the earth’

2013-05-18 00:00

NEVER one to shy away from controversy, Snoop Lion (aka Snoop Dogg) told reporters in Durban that he believed marijuana was a “herb from the earth put here for us to enjoy”.

Describing the recreational drug as his “girlfriend”, the American rapper added: “I love her to death … I believe the more people who indulge, the more peaceful they are.”

He also hit back at critics within the Rastafari community, including Bunny Wailer, who have described his conversion to Rastafarianism, following a stay in Jamaica in 2012, as a gimmick. He said they were just envious of the spotlight he had put on the movement.

“For me being a Rasta is a way of life. I want people to pay attention to the real message of the Rastafari — love and peace,” Snoop Lion said.

“I feel like I’m Bob Marley reincarnated and I say that in a meaning of love, peace and understanding.

“I feel like I am an extension of what he was and am just continuing what he would have done if he had been here, with us, today.”

Snoop Lion is performing at the MTV Africa All Stars KwaZulu-Natal concert at the Moses Mabhida Stadium tonight.

Also on the bill are South African stars, Zahara, Big Nuz, Zakes Batwini, Professor, DJ Cleo and DJ Tira, D’Banj, Flavour, 2Face and DJ Caise from Nigeria, Fally Ipupa, from the Congo and Camp Mulla, who hail from Nairobi, Kenya.

Gates open at 5 pm. Tickets are R40 at Computicket.
