All clean: swimming event’s doping tests negative

2009-09-10 00:00

LAUSANNE (Switzerland) — Swimming’s controlling body Fina yesterday announced that all doping tests undertaken at the recent swimming world championship have returned negative.

In a statement released here, Fina said that they had taken 252 tests from swimmers, who broke an astonishing 43 world records at the meet, 30 from the open water swimming, 33 from diving, 11 from synchronised swimming and 65 from water polo.

“Following the conclusion of the entire analysis procedure, Fina is pleased to announce that 391 doping control tests were conducted in Rome with the occasion of the 13th Fina World Championships and all were negative.

“This total includes 162 EPO screening tests,” they said.

The organisation said they were considering the long-term storage of samples to permit analyses in the future should there be indications to do so.

Currently Fina does not — like many other sporting federations — keep doping tests.

There were no reported doping cases at the 2005 and 2007 world championships either.

Fina was criticised earlier this year after it emerged that they had not undertaken any doping tests in the run-up to the world championships.
