All eyes on ‘Battle of the Balls’

2013-01-11 00:00

WHILE there is plenty of club cricket to keep the players busy after the festive-season break, more fun is to be had with the announcement that the KZN Inland team will be donning unfamiliar soccer boots on January 26 when they take on Maritzburg United in a soccer match at Harry Gwala Stadium.

This development comes after the announcement earlier this week that the Maritzburg United footballers will be wearing cricket gear when they take on the KZN Inland provincial team in a cricket match set for 6 pm this evening at Maritzburg Oval.

The outcome of these two encounters will enable either the cricketers or footballers to win the “Battle of the Balls” trophy, which is hoped will become an annual event in getting the sporting brothers in Alexandra Park closer together in a mutually beneficial relationship.

Meanwhile, round six of the KZN Inland Premier 50 League resumes on Sunday when log-leaders Standard host sixth-placed Midlands at Wanderers Club.

Third-placed Varsity entertain second-placed Zingari at Varsity Oval and fourth-placed Young Natalians welcome fifth-placed Lancashire to the Carter High School pitch.

Next Sunday, January 20, sees the return of the KFC Inland Premier T20 competition at Varsity Oval before the resumption of the KZN InterCity T20 League at Varsity on January 25, with more Premier 50 cricket on January 27.

It is also worth noting that Boland captain Ryan Canning became only the second South African wicketkeeper to score back-to-back hundreds in a first-class match when he achieved the feat against KZN Inland at PMB Oval last weekend.

He follows in the footsteps of the legendary SA keeper Johnny Waite who did the same more than 60 years ago.

Meanwhile, the KZN Coastal Premier 50 League resumes on Sunday with log-leaders Crusaders hosting Chatsworth United at their Ranleigh Crescent club in Durban North.

Topham take on DHS Rhythm at DHS Old Boys’ cricket ground, while Chatsworth Sporting visit Pinetown at Lahee Park. African Warriors meet Delta at Till’s Crescent, while Uthungulu are at home to Berea Rovers at Addison Park.

The KZN Women’s League resumes on January 20.
