All roads lead to Greytown’s mightiest Mighty Men conference

2009-04-23 00:00

With 65 000 delegates registered for this weekend’s Mighty Men Conference outside Greytown, the mood was festive as scores of campers arrived yesterday at Shalom Ministries. The speaker at the event, evangelist Angus Buchan, was on retreat and not at Shalom yesterday as preparations ran smoothly.

“We welcome anyone and everyone, whether the person has registered or not,” media liaison Riaan Jansen van Vuuren said at a press briefing yesterday afternoon. “We will not turn a person away at the gate if he cannot produce a ticket. It’s not about the ticket, it’s about the person being here to hear the message.”

Traffic was dense but flowed steadily into the campsite areas yesterday afternoon.

Final preparations by the organising staff were being made and so far all looks to be on track.

“Our website is currently getting one hit every 15 seconds, and these reflect individual bookings as well as group bookings,” Jansen van Vuuren said. “If you go on previous year’s figures, we usually have double the amount of people arriving compared with those that registered.”

Logistically, the conference is something to behold. “We’ve got the biggest stage we can find,” Buchan told The Witness last week. The stage stands eight storeys high and boasts day/night screens visible from 350 metres away.

Nic Fairclough, who works with the likes of Matt Redman and Tree63, will be managing the sound.

He said, ”We’ve got a quarry here that’s five times the size of what it was before to provide shale to build these roads and to make space for the coaches from Cape Town, Bloemfontein and Pretoria.”
