All round fab fest: Thousands celebrate Splashy’s 25th

2014-04-21 00:00

FESTIVAL-GOERS turned out in their thousands to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Splashy Fen music festival on a farm outside Underberg over the Easter weekend.

This year’s event featured a showcase on some of the best bands of the nineties including Just Jinjer, Squeal, Wonderboom and Tree 63, whose former members flew in from Canada to join Durban-based vocalist John Ellis on stage for the first time since 2008.

Ard Matthews from Just Jinjer posted a selfie with thousands of fans in the crowd and said of his Splashy experience: “Thanks for an amazing show and all the support you wonderful humans.”

Sharlene Versfeld of Durban raved, “I have not been since 2008. It was superb. Took our kids and they had a blast, we stayed in the family campsite. … It’s well organised — interesting food, hot showers and clean loos. All round a fab fest.”

Other highlights were performances by the legendary Vusi Mahlasela, South Africa’s blues maestro Dan Patlansky, and hot new artists Jeremy Loops, Matthew Mole and Durban band Gangs of Ballet, who posted on Twitter: “... Privileged to be a part of the history. You were all beautiful…”

Away from the music stages festival-goers were able to enjoy stand-up comedy from the likes of Rob van Vuuren, browse around the arts and crafts fair or simply chill out and enjoy the scenery of the southern Berg.
