All swell for Nel in Bloem Tour race

2010-12-03 00:00

COLIN Nel’s impressive showing in the Sunshine Tour Qualifying School tournament continued yesterday, as a birdie-birdie finish saw Nel jump back to the top of the leader board.

“It was a great way to finish, because conditions were tougher today,” Nel told The Witness last night.

The bubbly Maritzburg Golf Club product is very keen to place highly in the final standings, as it will have a major impact on his season next year.

“Playing here and knowing that I already have a Tour card is great, but I know how stressful this past season has been with having to pre-qualify for every event.”

Unlike many of the players trying to make the jump from amateur to pro this week, Nel has had a taste — and is all the better for it.

“It definitely helps that I have been in a lot of tournament situations during the season, and I am now able to handle the disappointment of a dropped shot easier,” he explained.

While others have gone through the full range of emotions at Schoeman Park and Bloemfontein golf clubs this week, Nel has been more relaxed.

Even yesterday’s windy conditions didn’t deter him, as he signed off his final stint on Schoeman Park.

“I am glad I don’t have to play the 17th and 18th holes there again [having bogeyed both holes twice], and am looking forward to finishing strong.”

Nel, on 11-under, is three shots to the good going into today’s decisive fourth round.

The top 70 after today’s play will go into the final round at Bloemfontein Golf Club tomorrow, and that final 30 will secure their professional playing rights for 2011.

Another Maritzburg hopeful, Chris van der Merwe, has a lot to do today after a third straight round of two over par, which leaves him on the brink of missing out altogether.
