TEN things worth knowing about Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan’s medium-term budget policy statement.

1. The Public Protector gets R8 million extra to investigate systematic causes of problems and complaints against organs of state.

2. The Department of Environmental Affairs gets R80,7 million more for additional game rangers for Operation Rhino.

3. R450 million extra will go towards the refurbishment of the Mthatha airport.

4. Prisons saved R32,8 million from the special remission of sentences announced by President Jacob Zuma earlier this year.

5. The Department of Water Affairs saved R227,5 million because of belt-tightening in terms of catering, consultants and travel.

6. R2,3 billion in tax money was spent on “unforeseeable and unavoidable” expenditure.

7. The increase in public servants’ salaries cost R5,5 billion more than expected.

8. Government departments collected R440,1 million by themselves (not through taxes).

9. The newly appointed Public Works Deputy Minister Jeremy Cronin will get R3,8 million to establish his office, while his newly appointed counterpart in the department of Women, Children and People with Disabilities, Hendrietta Bopane-Zulu, will get

R7,2 million.

10. The 2013 African Cup of Nations will cost the country R461 million.
