All you need to know about today’s voting

2014-05-07 00:00

• Voting stations open from 7 am to 9 pm.

• SMS your ID number to 32810 (R1,00 per SMS), or call 0800 11 8000 (+27 11 654 1000 from outside South Africa) to check if you are registered and where you should vote, or log onto

• IEC call centre phone number is 0800 11 8000 or 011 654 1000.

• 5 113 626 people are registered to vote in KZN — 2 893 072 women and 2 220 554 men.

• Follow @IECSouthAfrica on Twitter.

• Physically disabled voters can choose someone to help them, like the presiding officer, but an observer and, if available, two agents from different parties must be present.

• Incorrect ballots

If you incorrectly mark a ballot paper and realise this before placing the paper in the ballot box, ask for a new ballot paper. Make sure that the incorrect one is marked as “cancelled”. Once your ballot has been placed in the ballot box, it can’t be removed.

• The ballot papers

One is for the National Assembly and the other for the provincial legislature. You do not have to fill in the same party on both ballot papers — you can choose different parties.

• How do you make your mark?

Make your mark in the box next to the party of your choice. Make only one mark per ballot paper. Your mark must not touch any of the walls/lines of the box. It is best to make a cross.

If you make a mistake, do not put your paper in the box. Call an IEC official, who will cancel your paper and give you a new one.

• Most people will go to the voting stations early. Avoid long queues by going to the voting station between 10 am and 12 pm or 1.30 pm and 4 pm when most people would have voted already.
