Alleged PMB drug dealer Loganathan Reddy denied bail

Alleged Pietermaritzburg drug dealer Loganathan Reddy (49), who was allegedly caught in possession of 807 Ecstasy and 189 Mandrax tablets with a street value of more than R60 000 at his Sarojini Road home on February 13, has been denied bail by magistrate Raymond Kunene.

Kunene said in his judgment yesterday that it is important for the public to have confidence in the criminal justice system.

Investigating officer Inspector M. Balmookan testified that there was a public outcry in Reddy’s area by people who claimed their children were drug users, but he could not get statements because people were afraid to come forward.

Balmookan testified that it is alleged two policemen caught Reddy counting the tablets in his bedroom, while the defence claims Reddy was framed and that drugs were planted on him.

The defence called two witnesses — Reddy’s wife, Charmaine, and his neighbour, Khaled Rahim (74) — who testified that after searching the house five police officers left empty-handed and returned later with a “package” alleged to contain drugs that were then “planted” on Reddy.

Kunene said he agrees with prosecutor Miriam Aboobaker that these are matters to be decided by the trial court and not relevant to the issue of bail.

He said Reddy appears to have a predisposition to commit offences while on bail — he has two pending cases for drug- related offences, and did not inform the court about one of these matters in his affidavit.

He also had regard to the gravity of the charges.

The case was postponed until March 30 for a decision by the senior public prosecutor.
