Alleged gang members in court

2008-06-03 00:00

Four men alleged to be members of the “five-minute gang” appeared briefly in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court yesterday sporting injuries including dog bites and a gunshot wound.

The accused are Sibongiseni Zwane (31) and Mndeni Vilakazi (25), both of Ntuzuma, and Jabulani Hadebe (35) and Ntokoza Majola (32) of kwaMashu.

Police spokesman Senior Superintendent Henry Budhram yesterday confirmed that investigators released a Durban lawyer who had been detained on suspicion of possessing stolen property believed to be connected with the housebreaking syndicate.

Budhram said the attorney had given police an explanation and further investigations were under way to establish proof of ownership of the property in question.

The four accused who appeared in court yesterday are charged with housebreaking and theft of a substantial amount of jewellery and alcohol from the home of a Mr S. Moodley in Kelly Place, Montrose, on Saturday, May 31.

They also face charges of housebreaking with intent to commit an offence at the house of Dr M.

Howard in Valbridge Road on the same day and of malicious injury to property, having allegedly damaged the door of the Howards’ home with a hammer.

They were not asked to plead and were remanded in custody.

The State indicated that it will oppose an application by the accused for bail.

Defence advocate Mdu Mvune said he wanted it placed on record that the accused were assaulted by the police and bitten by police dogs during their arrest.
