Alleged serial rapist faces10 charges

2011-01-07 00:00

AN alleged serial rapist appeared briefly in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court yesterday in connection with 10 charges, including six counts of rape.

He is also charged with pointing a firearm at his victims and one count of robbery with aggravating circumstances for allegedly stealing three cellphones from one of the complainants.

The 27-year-old accused from Dambuza is charged with raping three teenagers, all around 15 and 14 years old, and three women in their early twenties.

The rapes allegedly occurred in the Haniville area in December 2009 and March 2010.

The accused cannot be named until he has pleaded to the charges because they involve sexual offences.

He was expected to apply for bail yesterday.

However, he elected to abandon his bail application after state prosecutor Rene Padayachee added further charges to the charge sheet, bringing the total to 10.

Magistrate Divesh Mootheram informed the accused that he faces minimum sentences of life imprisonment in respect of each of the charges of rape of girls under the age of 16 years if convicted.

The case was postponed to January 24 for further investigation.
