Alliance: Hint of tensions in KZN

2010-06-09 00:00

A MEDIA statement by the KZN Young Communist League (YCL) has hinted at provincial-level tensions within the tripartite alliance over the South African Communist Party’s (SACP) anti-corruption stance.

The statement calls on the provincial police commissioner to consider performing a security assessment of the safety of SACP provincial secretary Themba Mthembu.

YCL provincial spokesperson Mafika Mndebele said there is an “attempt by some ANC leaders in KZN to single out Mthembu and interpret his anti-corruption stance as a vendetta against certain senior ANC leaders in the province”.

In the same statement, the YCL called for an investigation into alleged procurement irregularities at Ithala Bank. It also called on all law enforcement agencies and the alliance to lead the anti-corruption struggle against the “anti-heroic tendencies by PPPs [Pick-Pocketing-Politicians]”.

Meanwhile, Business Day reported that ANC leaders, after a national working committee meeting on Monday, have decided to drop plans to lodge disciplinary action against Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi. The ruling party would not comment on the matter.

Cosatu spokesperson Patrick Craven said he does not know if the report is true. “If it is true, it would be welcomed.”
