Almost twins: Twin sisters give birth an hour apart

2009-07-10 00:00

IDENTICAL twin sisters Sonya Breytenbach and Rachelle Gordon have a pair of almost twins after they gave birth to healthy babies an hour and a minute apart at Medi-Clinic yesterday.

Not only did they share the same room and wear matching pyjamas, but they had the same doctor and the same midwife.

While “younger” twin Sonya said they have always been close, she said falling pregnant and giving birth on the same day was never planned, but rather an act of God.

“We went overseas together and I used to help get rid of unwanted boyfriends for her,” said Sonya teasingly.

She said only Rachelle and her husband Michael were trying for a third child.

But when Rachelle told her about being pregnant, Sonya suspected she might also be, and a doctor confirmed this the next day.

Sonya was supposed to have her baby two days after her sister at a different hospital, but because of medical aid issues, she ended up at Medi-Clinic.

Rachelle said that it has been fun to share her pregnancy with her sister.

“We felt things together and were constantly calling each other and exchanging notes; ‘How are you sleeping, are you feeling this?’ It’s been an exciting journey together.”

Rachelle gave birth to a healthy 3,5 kg baby girl, Leah Kate at 10.15 am, while Sonya had her 3,2 kg baby boy, Adam Walker, at 11.16 am.

Rachelle has only girls, while Sonya has just boys.

The dads, Michael and James, who have known each other since grade four, thought it was nice to have the babies on the same day. Michael joked that it does almost feel like he has two wives.

Both sisters are in the insurance business.
