Always a bridesmaid

2008-02-01 00:00

IF you are not in the mood for romantic comedy, you are out of luck this weekend as only one film is starting locally, and that’s the romantic comedy 27 Dresses, showing at CineCentre. I am Legend now joins the Nu Metro line-up, while Elizabeth: The Golden Age and Martian Child are showing at Ster Kinekor. Aaja Nachle is in the Sunday Bollywood slot at CineCentre.

Anne Fletcher directs 27 Dresses, which stars Katherine Heigl, James Marsden and Ed Burns. Jane (Heigl) is a vivacious New Yorker with a great job, a great apartment and a collection of ugly bridesmaid dresses she’ll never wear again. She is so invested in other people’s love lives that she is guilty of “wedding-hopping”, a feat witnessed by Kevin (James Marsden), a newspaper reporter who realises that a great story on this always-a-bridesmaid is his ticket off the wedding beat. Then Jane’s sexy younger sister arrives from Europe and immediately captures the heart of Jane’s boss. Jane is expected to plan yet another wedding, but this time, she is secretly in love with the groom. Reviewers in America found this one predictable, but okay if you enjoy froth — and hideous bridesmaid’s outfits.
