Amnesty plan for traffic fines dating back to 2010

2013-06-14 00:00

DRIVERS in Pietermaritzburg may be granted a traffic fine amnesty allowing them to pay half of their outstanding fines dating back to 2010.

The aim is to recoup as much of the R11 million in outstanding fines as possible. The amnesty is subject to approval by the Justice Department and the duration and dates of the period of reprieve will be decided by the Director of Public Prosecutions. Once the dates are known, they will be publicised by Msunduzi Municipality.

Msunduzi’s executive committee (Exco) was undecided last week on whether to support the amnesty. Members asked for more information from officials to check whether the exercise would be cost-effective. They changed their minds yesterday after learning what amount was owing to the city. Municipal manager Mxolisi Nkosi said an amnesty for a six-month period last year netted R2 million of R6 million owing in outstanding fines.

The community services portfolio committee chairman, councillor Manilall Inderjith, led support for the amnesty, saying it would be in the municipality’s interests to recover as much as it could.
