An unusual thriller

2008-04-04 00:00

TWO films open locally today — the thriller Vantage Point at CineCentre and the local film, Confessions of a Gambler at Nu Metro where Charlie Wilson’s War also returns. Waterhorse comes back to Ster Kinekor and Black & White continues in the Sunday Bollywood slot at CineCentre.

Rayda Jacobs and Amanda Lane direct Confessions of a Gambler, based on Jacobs’s book. Jacobs, Rautiz Jenkins, Aqueel Khan and Reza Kippie star.

Abeeda is a pious Muslim woman, who also happens to be a gambling addict. Jacobs’s 2004 novel won the 2004 Sunday Times Literary Award and the Herman Charles Bosman Award. The film has also just premiered at the Dubai International Film Festival where it was well received.

Vantage Point is directed by Pete Travis and stars Dennis Quaid, Matthew Foz, Forest Whitaker and Sigourney Weaver. The American president is on a trip when an assassin strikes. The chaotic events, lasting for around 20 minutes, are told from eight different perspectives — a Secret Service man, a TV crew, a tourist and so on. So what really did happen? Reviews have been a bit mixed overseas, but it should offer an interesting riff on the standard thriller plot. — Arts Editor.
