‘Anger ate him inside’

A MAN who played hide and seek with police after allegedly killing a four-year-old child, killed himself at Kwamafunze near Elandskop yesterday.

Nhlakanipho Nxele (24) was hiding on the mountain near his home when police surrounded the area. It is alleged that he shot himself in the mouth with a homemade firearm.

Nxele went on the run after attempting to kill his fiancée, Thandeka Shezi, on Saturday and killing her niece Londeka on Tuesday morning. He subsequently phoned Shezi’s family, threatening to kill more members of their family.

“We don’t know what turned a good and quiet man into this person who ended his life after playing hide and seek with police,” said a relative who would not be named.

“He was a quiet person in this family, such that you will think everything is okay in his life, but now it appears that he was not just quiet but he had this anger eating him inside. He was working at Mkondeni and he was a responsible member of his family,” said the relative.

Residents in the area were astonished at the drama that unfolded since Saturday night. Yesterday they stood next to his body, which lay in the donga where he ended his life. A knife and a homemade gun were next to his body.

Shezi’s sister, Nosipho Shezi, told The Witness that Nxele was a good person who had loved her sister.

“I don’t know what happened to him because he was a good person that did not even drink alcohol.

“”He was a young man not known for violence or participating in gangs.

“He was a gentleman,” she said.

Shezi remains under intensive care in hospital, recovering from wounds sustained when Nxele shot her.

Londeka was stabbed and killed outside her school on Tuesday.

Police said tests would be conducted on the weapons taken from Nxele to determine if they had been used on Shezi and Londeka.
