Angler pulls out giant cob at The block

Aslam Shaikh of Port Shepstone showing off his big catch, an 18,5 kilogram dusky cob that he pulled out at The Block in Port Shepstone. Shaikh said a friend also had a big catch earlier that morning. Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife’s fishing information says the dusky cob is also known as ‘daga salmon’ in KwaZulu-Natal and is one of the largest members of the cob family. They mature at six years and can become 42 years old, tipping the scales at 75 kg. In Australia the cob is known as the ‘mulloway’ or ‘jewfish’. The name ‘jewfish’ refers to the large earstones, which are prized as jewels by some fishermen. To rebuild stocks of this important linefish species, most anglers at The Block support recent recommendations to increase the size limit and reduce the bag limit for cob, put forward by Ezemvelo Wildlife.
