2009-11-24 00:00

THE monument to the 2nd Battalion of the Rifle Brigade, commemorating the British soldiers who died in the night attack on Surprise Hill during the siege of Ladysmith, has been rebuilt.

A re-dedication ceremony will take place on December 11, exactly 110 years after the event.

A new memorial to the fallen burghers of the Pretoria Commando will be unveiled at the same ceremony. This burgher memorial will feature a special plaque in Hebrew to commemorate the first Jewish casualty on the Boers’ side in the Anglo-Boer War. Descendants of the fallen Boers are kindly requested to contact Jan Human at, as the organisers would like to extend an invitation to them.

The function will start at 11 am and lunch will be followed by short talks on aspects of the attack on Surprise Hill. It will take place in the Moth Hall at 17 Egerton Road in Ladysmith at 12.30 pm.

A hike to the gun-emplacement on the summit of Surprise Hill will take place on December 12 and may also be arranged for Friday afternoon. Options to visit nearby battlefields, regional game reserves and Ingula archeological sites over the weekend are open.

For more information contact the Siege Museum Trust at or at 082 801 6524, or the Ladysmith Historical Society at or at 083 627 8446.
