Anguish over missing girls

2014-06-04 00:00

MYSTERY surrounds the disappearance of three schoolgirls, thought to have been “taken” from a Western Cape high school on Monday.

Mishkah Thurston, Logan Saville and Lisa Tockenstroom failed to arrive at Plumstead High School to write an exam on Monday morning, and were last seen in uniform getting into a car.

The three have not been seen or heard from since.

Their families received bizarre SMSes from a cellphone number traced to Pretoria saying that they had chosen to run away.

The girls’ cellphones have been turned off and their Facebook profiles have been shut down.

Frantic parents have launched an appeal for anyone with information on their whereabouts to come forward.

Thurston, originally of KwaZulu-Natal, had been in her matric year.

Her sister Levonne, of Glenwood, said her family had been fractured since the 18-year-old went missing,

“We just don’t know what to think any more, it is just so strange because of the SMS that was sent to all the parents. I hope they have run away and it is not something more sinister, it would be unimaginable to think about them falling into some human trafficking ring,” she said.

“I found out that she was missing from my dad whom she lives with. All three girls had just disappeared and there has been no contact from them since,” she said tearfully.

Thurston said that a pupil had come forward, insisting that the girls had left the school in a car.

“The principal at the school said a student came forward who insists that the girls had gotten into a car with a man known to be a Nigerian merchant from the area.

“My dad opened a case and now the police are involved trying to find her. You just don’t know what to think, I feel so helpless because I am all the way here and I feel like I can do nothing,” she said.

“We were very close and we talk all the time. Her family situation at home was fine but I don’t think she is the type to run away,” she added.
