‘Anni wasn’t happy’

CAPE TOWN — Anni Dewani had ended her relationship with Shrien Dewani in October or November 2009 because he allegedly had fertility problems and because they were not intimate.

This information is contained in a statement made by Anni’s cousin Sneha Mashru in January 2011 to the British police. According to the statement, Anni wanted children.

Mashru also wrote Anni had described the Dewani household as “stiff” and “lonely” and that Anni had sent her daily text messages, e-mails and also told her over the phone that she was not comfortable with Dewani and that they fought and argued a lot.

On their wedding day, October 27, 2010, Dewani criticised Anni, saying her “sari was not right”. According to the statement, Anni told Mashru the couple had decided to pretend to be in love for the duration of the three-day wedding ceremonies. Anni reportedly asked Mashru at the first ceremony if they appeared to be in love.

Mashru stated Anni had written to Dewani two days before the wedding, saying she did not want to continue with the wedding.

“In an answer to Anni he said he was in love with her and asked her to reconsider her decision. He promised to change. The engagement continued.”

Dewani was reportedly always critical about Anni’s appearance and had asked Mashru to accompany him to buy clothes for Anni. “He wanted to change the ugly ducking into a swan before the engagement.”

Anni allegedly threw her engagement ring at Dewani on September 22 while they were in India to arrange their wedding. In text messages to Mashru, Anni wrote of the friction between them, that they still did not spend any time alone and that Dewani preferred to sleep on the couch.

But they made up and the arrangements continued. Shortly before their wedding Dewani suffered from food poisoning. He did not want Anni to visit him in hospital. When Mashru and Anni made a surprise visit, they found another visitor with him in hospital. “He asked Anni what she was doing there.” Anni asked why others could visit Dewani but she was told to stay away.

Mashru is one of the state witnesses in Dewani’s trial for Anni’s death, which starts today.
