ST LUCIA — The annual iSimangaliso Sodwana Bay Shootout, now in its 13th year, is taking place at several of the world heritage site’s diving reefs.

The competition started yesterday and will end on October 6.

Park CEO Andrew Zaloumis said the event was South Africa’s premier annual underwater photo and video competition with the number of entrants having increased from previous years with over 160 registered, the highest number of entries ever.

“We would like to encourage residents and visitors to Sodwana Bay to participate and share in the comradeship offered by local businesses and residents alike.

“Not only are there great prizes on offer; the event promises to provide fun for everyone.

“Collaboration and working partnerships with local businesses and communities are critical to growing tourism and conservation success,” Zaloumis said.

The shootout aims to promote activities within the park while “spreading the message of conservation and the unique world heritage values” of biodiversity, eco-systems and superlative natural beauty.”

Photographic themes cover the environment, conservation and the appreciation of marine life using various photographic techniques.

The competition recognises competitors from novices to advanced entrants.

Competition categories include “underwater” and a newly added category, “land”, for children, teens, novices and intermediate and experienced photographers.
