2010-10-07 00:00

THE 48th annual University of KwaZulu-Natal Pietermaritzburg campus Sports Banquet takes place at the Victoria Country Club today.

Guest speaker for the evening, which is again sponsored by Johnson & Johnson, will be Comrades CEO Gary Boshoff, who was CEO of the Blue Bulls Rugby Union for six years. Prior to his time at Loftus, he worked at the University of the Western Cape’s sport bureau.

Boshoff was also a formidable lock in his day and represented the Saru Springbok rugby team on numerous occasions.

The Professor N.D. Clarence Trophy for Sportswoman of the Year has two nominees, hockey player Kara-Lee Stella, and mountain climber Faye Brouard.

Stella is the backbone of the Varsity ladies’ first team and the KZN Inland provincial side. A hardworking player with exceptional skills and a commitment to the game, she had great performances at the SA Women’s U21 and SA Senior Interprovincial tournaments.

Stella’s performances caught the eye of the national selectors and she has been identified as one of 10 new young players to be included in the South Africa senior women’s programme.

Brouard is a talented mountain climber who has achieved excellent results this year.

She won the University Sport South Africa (Ussa) bouldering and sport climbing tournament and was winner of the rock and road competition at the end of 2009.

According to the website, she is ranked the number one women’s climber in South Africa and 59th in the world.

The Nux Trophy for Sportsman of the Year has three nominees in canoeist Andrew Birkett, cricketer Bradley Moses and squash player Alan McGuigan.

Birkett made an exceptional start to the year by winning the 2010 Dusi Canoe Marathon with partner Jason Graham.

He was also the first U21 at the SA K2 Canoe River Championships and the second U21 at the 2009 Fish River Canoe Marathon.

Moses is one of the most talented cricketers born and bred in Pietermaritzburg.

He has been a first-class cricketer for the last eight years and has put together a number of outstanding performances with the bat.

Moses’s hard work and perseverance finally paid off with him being called up for the Dolphins franchise and he recently scored his maiden century against the Cape Cobras, ending on an undefeated 126.

McGuigan is one of the leading young squash players in South Africa.

He represented South Africa at the World University Championships in Australia and will also represent the country in the U23 Jesters World Tour.

Recognised as a true gentlemen of the sport, McGuigan also represented the KZN Midlands A team and led the UKZN squash team with a record of 16 wins and two losses.
