Another Comrades qualifier lost

2009-10-16 00:00

THE athletics weekend commences with the first of the youth, junior and senior track and field league meetings at King’s Park tomorrow morning. Events are held for athletes of 15 years and upwards commencing at 9 am and the KwaZulu-Natal Athletics office has more details of the programme at 031 312 9374. Entries close one hour prior to each event.

The first of the three road races is hosted by Canon Richards Bay Athletic Club. A 15-kilometre run and 10-kilometre walk are the distances on offer. The races commence from the Bay Hall clubhouse. The circular course through Meerensee has the potential for fast times. Registration commences at 1 pm for the 3 pm start. There will be the usual post-race hospitality with all finishers getting a medal. Virna Mc Master has more details at 082 447 3040.

Newcastle Harriers hold their Taxi City Spar night race on Saturday afternoon from the Ferrum Swimming Pool at 4 pm. There are five-kilometre, 10-kilometre and half- marathon distances for the circular route. Registration opens at 2 pm but the race will start at 3.30 pm. Walkers are welcome. Contact Andre at 083 653 2865 for more details.

The largest, but hilliest race of the weekend is the Chatsworth half- marathon from the local stadium. Entries are taken on Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm and on race day before the 6 am start. Although challenging, the course is through friendly residential areas with the first five kilometres relatively easy before the steep climb around half way and the hard work of the second half. The first five men and five women win gold medals, the next 200 finishers win silver and all other finishers get bronze. All finishers receive T-shirts. There are also numerous lucky draw prizes up for grabs.

Walkers have a 15-kilometre option with similar terrain and rewards. Logan Naidoo has more details at 083 997 1048.

Runners are reminded that the Township marathon scheduled for October 25 has been cancelled. This is the loss of another Comrades qualifier from the local fixture list, and with previous Comrades runners having only two weeks left to register for the 2010 down run there are fewer than 4 000 entries remaining before the October 31 cutoff.

Novices get their opportunity to enter Comrades from November 1, the day after the current novice SMS competition comes to an end. By sending “2010” to SMS code 38275 before October 31, novice entrants could be one of 10 winners of free entry to next year’s event. SMS costs R10.
