Another award for ‘Witness’ hockey writer

2007-12-11 00:00

The award is in recognition of a person’s “contribution and dedication to hockey in KZN”.

KZNHA president Lennie Botha also commended Cook “for the mileage [he gives to] hockey, both in Natal and in South Africa”.

Holman, after whom the award is named, represented South Africa and played in many of the successful Natal teams that won national hockey titles in the eighties.

During his own playing days, Cook, who has been The Witness hockey writer for a number of years, played provincial indoor and outdoor hockey for Natal at schools and U21 level and also represented the SA Defence Force U21, country districts and senior B teams during his national service.

At the recent SA Hockey Association awards banquet in Pretoria, Cook was named the 2007 SA Hockey Writer of the Year, along with Western Cape-based journalist Eunice Visagie. And at the KZN Midlands Hockey Association’s dinner and awards evening held at Maritzburg Golf Club, Cook was commended for his work by the hockey body’s president, Gary Carson.
