Another blow to KZN music industry as maskandi artist Sbongiseni Ntombela dies

THE KwaZulu-Natal music industry has been dealt yet another blow with the recent death of maskandi artist Sbongiseni Ntombela after a long illness.

Ntombela (33) died in Nongoma after complaining of chest pains for some time.

He was a member of the popular maskandi group Amageza Amahle since its formation in 2004.

Ntombela’s sister Lindiwe said her brother had complained of chest pains and that doctors had said his condition was critical.

“He was very ill when he arrived home from Johannesburg on Monday. Arrangements were made for him to be taken to an inyanga in Nongoma, as we believed that his illness required traditional treatment.

“That’s where he died. It is sad because he was a very healthy person when he left home for Johannesburg some years ago,” she said.

Ntombela leaves three children, his mother and sister.

He will be buried in Newcastle on Friday.

Amageza Amahle group leader Mtshengiseni Gcwentsa said Ntombela was a very understanding person.

He said he was there when the group was formed and that they worked well together.

“I’ve known him way before the group was formed and he has never changed his personality.”

The KZN MEC for Arts and Culture, Weziwe Thusi, said she was saddened and shocked at Ntombela’s passing.

“We only heard of his illness this past week and now he is no more. Ntombela’s death is a huge loss to music, particularly the maskandi genre. We are really saddened,” Thusi said.

Ntombela’s death comes barely a week after the province buried maskandi queen Busi Mhlongo.
