Another gruelling clash for tired Impi

2013-02-11 00:00

A BRUISED and battered University of KwaZulu-Natal Impi travel to Bellville for their 7 pm Varsity Shield match against University of Western Cape (UWC) tonight.

Three matches in eight days — and having played in every round of the competition without a break — the heroic Impi have pulled off two wins over University of Fort Hare Blues and Tshwane University of Technology Vikings and are in second place on the log, but went down bravely to Shield leaders the Central University of Technology (CUT) last time out.

Head coach Shawn van Rensburg and captain and number eight Andre Greyvenstein know no other way but to lead from the front and their inspiration will be critical in goading tired bodies into one more huge effort before the players have the blessing of a bye in the next round.

But it’s not just tired bodies and injuries that the Impi have to contend with, as third-placed UWC are raring to go, having come off a bye and enjoying a game in hand. And of course, they have their fanatical home crowd.

A big Impi change is Jeandre Small filling the No. 9 berth after having played centre in earlier games.
