Another week of exciting school sport

2010-06-21 00:00

THE second week of SA schools’ interprovincial hockey and rugby competition gets under way today when the SA U18 girls’ and boys’ national hockey provincials take place, as well as the SA Rugby U18 Academy Week.

Just like the U16 Boys’ IPT last week, this week’s SA U18 boys’ interprovincial hockey tournament venues will be Maritzburg College’s Papes Astro and the AB Jackson Greenfields Turf.

KZN Inland U18 are the defending champions and will be hoping to emulate their U16 side, who retained their title last week.

No fewer than 20 teams, or 320 players, are participating in the U18 IPT and the matches to watch today should be KZN Inland versus Western Province B at 7.30 am at Pape’s, with Border versus KZN Coastals thereafter. KZN Inland also meet Eastern Gauteng at 2 pm at the ABJ.

And at the same time in Potchefstroom, the SA U18 Girls’ IPT takes place.

In Vryheid, the SA Rugby Union U18 Academy Week features three KZN teams among the 26 squads and around 570 players taking part. The match venues are at Vryheid and Pionier high schools.

The KZN XV meet Elsen at Pionier at 11.30 am today, the KZN CD squad face Griquas at Vryheid at 2 pm and in the main game at the same venue, KZN tackle the Pumas at 6.45 pm. Other games to catch the eye are Bulls against WP at 3.15 pm and Free State versus the Lions at 12.45 pm.

And at the GHS Greenfields turf in Pietermaritzburg, the SA Country Districts interprovincial hockey tournament is taking place, which includes 12 teams.
