Answers on pets’ death

2010-10-02 00:00

THE deaths of two pet monkeys at the hands of Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife (EKZNW) may not have been entirely in vain. That’s the feeling of many people who work with primates and have asked for a meeting with Ezemvelo to discuss the future treatment of primates by the wildlife authority.

On October 18, the so-called primate community will meet EKZNW and they then hope to unpack recent incidents where monkeys have been euthansed “and get the honest, even if unpleasant, answers”.

A source shared an e-mail doing the rounds among the primate community that documents specific questions about Johan Olivier’s monkeys, Billy and Doonsie, who were euthanased recently. Olivier says he hopes to attend and hear the answers for himself.

He told Weekend Witness that following his suicide attempt last Friday, he is still very depressed.
