Anti-sex worker vigil at park tonight

2013-11-29 00:00

THE Bulwer Community Safety Forum is moving one gear up to rid the Glenwood area of prostitutes. The forum and residents will today hold an anti-prostitution night vigil at Baxter Park from 5 pm to 11 pm.

The Witness reported recently that residents are fed up with the rampant usage of drugs and prostitution at the park down Clark Road.

A task team comprising the eThekwini Municipality and the police has been set up to rid the area of prostitutes. In a meeting held at the Glenwood Community Church early this month, the forum and residents decided to hold the night vigil as a way of chasing prostitutes away from the area. Local business people had also committed to fund the fencing off of the park should a proposal that is yet to be drafted for the municipality be successful.

The head of the eThekwini’s Safer Cities Unit, Martin Xaba, said the results of the task team’s work will not be immediately visible.

“The operation is ongoing. In social intervention we don’t see immediate results, but during the evaluation period we will be able to see if there’s progress,” said Xaba yesterday.

People taking part in the protest have been asked to bring along a torch or candle, luminous placards, a chair and something to drink.
