Appeal: blood donors needed in KZN

2008-12-21 00:00

THE South African National Blood Services (SANBS) has received a phenomenal response from donors in the midlands, after making an appeal in The Witness recently.

SANBS spokeswoman Shubnum Ismail thanked everyone who responded to the appeal, but added that the crisis is far from over.

“Until mid-January, we will still be in crisis … We especially need the Type O donors because their blood … transfuses to any patient.”

According to Ismail, the blood stock in the province is less than one day’s supply, but she said the problem is not unique to KZN. She said SANBS supplies all the major public and private hospitals in the province.

Blood donors must be between the ages of 16 and 65, weigh 50 kg or more and lead a “sexually safe” lifestyle.

Most current blood donors are between the ages of 36 to 50. “The new year is a time of new commitments. If we get more people from the other age groups to donate blood regularly in 2009 we will have a sustainable blood supply.”
