‘Applicants knew they must be fit’

2013-11-29 00:00

A PRE-REQUISITE for applicants in the Road Traffic Inspectorate job vacancies, advertised last year, was that they had to be fit and in excellent health.

This was said during the RTI Commission of Inquiry yesterday where Transport Department human resources manager Miranda Sindi Zwane was giving evidence.

Eight people died on December 27 and 28 last year during a fitness test of the applicants.

Zwane, who was involved in the human resources aspect of the recruitment, said the department should not be criticised for the test, because a pre-requisite for the job was that applicants had to be fit.

“We needed participants to know that we want people who have a degree of fitness. And had they started their training once they applied they would have been ready for the fitness exercise,” she said.

But Zwane conceded that they had not expected the turn-out. She said after they short-listed candidates, those candidates would have been subjected to a medical fitness test to ascertain their exact fitness levels.

Advocate Ravi Padayachee SC dismissed claims that applicants had not been given enough time to prepare.

He said proper consideration had been given to the applications received.

Padayachee said most of the applicants had indicated they were fit and their health was excellent.

The commission continues on Monday with Zwane still giving evidence.
