Armed gang storm Shell garage

2015-02-18 00:00

TEN men armed with AK47’s stormed a Shell garage in Chatsworth, Durban, early yesterday morning, wounding a Chubb security guard.

The attackers blew up an ATM and a drop safe, making off with an undisclosed amount of money.

Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said the men entered the garage and placed explosives at the ATM.

Two cars pulled into the Savannah Park’s Shell Garage yesterday, dispatching 10 men with AK47’s and 9 mm pistols and approached the petrol attendants.

“The suspects proceeded to the ATM inside the store and placed explosives on the bank machines. They then exited the store and detonated the explosives.”

A police source who could not be named said a drop safe was also bombed during the robbery.

“Chubb security were patrolling the area and when they drove towards the garage, they came under fire from the suspects,” said the source.

“A Chubb security guard was shot in the hip and taken to St Augustine’s Hospital.”

Zwane said the guard is in a stable condition in hospital.

Shell Garage manager Raven Govender said when he arrived at the garage this morning, it was utter chaos.

“I just saw the deposit unit had been blown up and the ATM had been blown up,” he said.

Govender said CCTV footage had not been recorded as the unit was severely damaged during the explosion of the ATM and deposit unit.

He added that despite the bombing and shooting at the garage, business would carry on as usual.

Chubb spokesperson Hayley Elwen said the matter would be investigated and could not comment on the incident further.

Chatsworth police station is investigating a case of business robbery and attempted murder.

No arrests have been made at this stage.
