Armed hijack: Third accused denied bail

2013-05-22 00:00

A THIRD accused has appeared in court in connection with the armed hijacking of a truck transporting a consignment of soaps, lotions and perfume worth R850 000 in Ashburton in August 2010.

Phumbani Dlungwana (40) was denied bail by magistrate Helgard Fobian yesterday.

Fobian said that based on the affidavit of the investigating officer (Captain J.D. Singh), the court was satisfied there appeared to be a strong case against Dlungwana. He said there were no exceptional circumstances favouring his release on bail.

Singh said charges had previously been withdrawn against Dlungwana. The charge has been reinstated.

Two others — police constable Sizwe Ndlovu and his uncle, Goodenough Ndlovu — are currently serving jail sentences for their role in the incident in which Simlindile Lawana was robbed of his truck and its load at gunpoint on August 30, 2010.

Singh said one of them was expected to testify against Dlungwana.

Dlungwana will appear in court again on May 28.
