Armscor: will the real chair please stand up?

2012-07-31 00:00

CAPE TOWN —  Armscor’s directors are sitting with two chairpersons and now wait on the new minister of Defence to say who is the real chair.

The previous chairperson, Lieutenant-General Moreti Motau, was fired by then minister of Defence, Lindiwe Sisulu, in a letter on June 11. Sisulu was herself transferred a day later and replaced by Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula. Motau has since then refused to leave his post. Sister paper Beeld has seen two letters in which Sisulu fired Motau and appointed R. Mokoena in his stead.

Daphney Chuma, Armscor spokesperson, told Beeld the group could not comment on the issue. Sonwabo Mbananga, spokesperson of Mapisa-Nqakula, said yesterday the new minister had yet to meet Armscor.

Meanwhile, critical contracts, including maintenance tenders for the airwing of the police, cannot be signed. The tenders have been waiting for signatures for almost 13 months.

David Maynier, Democratic Alliance defence spokesperson, described the situation in the top management of Armscor as “an internal civil war” and “a disaster”.
