Arrested: bakery robbery suspect found in hospital

A suspect allegedly wounded in the attempted robbery at Albany Bakeries last week was found and arrested at Grey's Hospital a day after the incident.

Police were tipped off that a 28-year-old man was admitted to the hospital and was being treated for a gunshot wound sustained during a robbery that went wrong.

During the attempted robbery on Thursday, three men wearing woollen hats and dark sunglasses approached the doors of a bakery delivery truck driven by Henry Nzaca (37).

Police spokeswoman Inspector Joey Jeevan said one of the suspects fired a shot towards Nzaca that penetrated the closed window on the driver's side and hit the other suspect.

"The suspect fell to the ground and in the process dropped his firearm, which Nzaca immediately grabbed É The other two suspects fled from the scene on foot and moments later the injured suspect also fled."

Jeevan said the police found the 28-year-old man in hospital with an open gunshot wound to his forehead.

He was arrested and is in stable condition under police guard, she added. He has been remanded in absentia by the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate's Court.
