Arrested nurse needs R70?000

PIETERMARITZBURG nurse Isra Devi Lutchman will have to fork out R70 000 in security to have her passport returned so she can travel home.

Lutchman, a nurse at St Anne’s hospital, was arrested on February 19 and detained for four days after a bullet was found lodged in her luggage at New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International airport. She has been charged with possession of arms and ammunition.

Family friend Surekha Singh said Lutchman was granted permission to return to South Africa but only if she paid the R70 000 as security.

“It’s a mad scramble right now for the family to raise the funds. It is downright ridiculous. People don’t have that kind of money lying around. A trip to India is sometimes a once in a lifetime opportunity,” said Singh, whose husband Pranil Maharaj is in New Delhi with Lutchman’s son Colin.

They travelled to the sub-continent on Wednesday to be with Lutchman for Friday’s court hearing.

Singh said it was also an “administrative nightmare” to open a bank account without Lutchman’s passport. The Indian Court requires the security to be in an Indian bank account.
