2011-06-07 00:00

SALES at the annual Art in the Park rebounded this year, with keen visitor-interest and a healthy foot-count being noted.

Although the final total sales-figure has not been released, total sales as at the end of Saturday (penultimate day) amounted to R1,6 million.

Events manager at Pietermaritzburg Tourism, Buhle Ndwandwe, told The Witness that this figure had already equalled last year’s total sales figure.

The overall top-selling artist as at the end of Saturday was Elme Eksteen of Pretoria, whose total sales at that point came in at R95 750.

The five-day event, which attracted almost 20 000 visitors, ended on Sunday.

A total of 55 artists from across the country showcased their creative works this year, including 10 artists from Pietermaritzburg.

The 94-year-old Pietermaritzburg artist Arthur Orme was one of the exhibiting artists.

He was joined by sculptor Audrey Rudnick, as well as Christopher Haw — who returned to the event after an absence of several years.

The event is the biggest outdoor art-selling exhibition in South Africa.
