Ashin Singh’s new move on Downer

2008-09-10 00:00

A criminal charge was yesterday brought against advocate Billy Downer SC, the state prosecutor in the Jacob Zuma case, by Pietermaritzburg magistrate Ashin Singh.

Police spokesman Senior Superintendent Henry Budhram confirmed that a charge of defeating the ends of justice was laid.

Some years ago, Singh was seconded to the prosecutions authority, and was sacked after a disciplinary inquiry that involved Downer.

The latest charge arises from allegations over the incidents behind Singh’s sacking, Budhram confirmed yesterday. He would only add that the police will investigate.

Singh turned his cellphone off when he was approached for comment last night.

Downer, who is abroad at present, said that Singh years ago laid charges against him and others in the prosecutions authority, which were dropped because they were without substance.

Singh last week filed papers making allegations against Downer, and then attempted to withdraw them a day later.
