Ashley bag three goals against Highway

2014-06-05 00:00

ASHLEY Plantimex travelled to Hillcrest last week to meet an improved Highway United outfit in the PFA Over-35 League, looking for more success after too many missed chances the previous week when the spoils were shared with FC Burrough.

Ashley started well, enjoying the lion’s share of possession, but it was Highway who came close to scoring first when Ashley keeper Jason Edwards was called into action with a superb save to deny the opposition striker.

Ashley were soon ahead though when Hayden Vincent laid off a ball for Blaine Meyer to find the net. A golden opportunity for Ashley was missed when Vincent was brought down in the area moments later, his kick from the spot saved.

If that wasn’t enough to have Ashley hanging their heads, skipper Phil Skerritt had to leave the field injured after a 50/50 tackle, his exit disrupting Ashley’s rhythm and shape.

As the first half wound down, Ashley’s defence was in business keeping many a spirited Highway attack at bay as Ashley hung onto their lead.

Strong words from team manager Sebastian Olejniczak at the break saw Ashley come out with determination in the second half, holding the ball and controlling the game.

Maurice Zastawa set the tone for the rest of the match when he managed to get in behind Highway’s defence to play a clever ball back for Elvis Govender to finish with aplomb and double the lead.

The joy was short-lived as Vincent was forced to hobble from the pitch with a knee injury soon after he had another opportunity to beat the keeper, his one-on-one effort again saved.

Olejniczak was forced to make some changes that saw Meyer pushed forward and Alex Vassilatos moved into midfield, playing on the left, where he enjoyed a superb game with precision passing and great ball for the men up front.

From one of his passes, Meyer was on target with his second goal of the match for Ashley to run out 3-0 winners.

For his double strike, Meyer was man of the match, although Skerritt had looked solid before his injury and Vassilatos’s contribution was vital.

The result sees Ashley Plantimex maintain their unbeaten run in the league, having conceded one goal to date and that from a penalty.

In other results, FC Burrough were surprise losers to PMB Blues 1-0, New Germany Old Boys won their second game on the trot, beating Ashley Dimalinx 1-0, and the biggest upset was Brettonwood Old Boys (BOB) beating defending league champions Savages 2-1.

This week Ashley Plantimex have a bye, although Olejniczak is hoping to give his lads a run in a friendly against Chatsworth Legends in preparation for the massive clash against Savages.

After six matches, Ashley Plantimex top the log with 16 points, four clear of BOB who have 12 points from five games. Savages have 10 points from six, Blues 10 points from five and New Germany Old Boys six points from five.

At the wrong end of the table, Hillary have a point, with FC Burrough on two points. Ashley Dimalinx languish in seventh with three points from six matches.

PFA Over 35 League Results:

BOB 2 Savages 1

Highway United 0 Ashley Plantimex 3

Ashley Dimalinx 0 New Germany Old Boys 1

FC Burrough 0 Blues 1

Bye - Hillary.
