Assault: Trial of traffic cop postponed to February

2011-01-18 00:00

Traffic officer, Edward Xolani Mtshali appeared briefly in the Camperdown magistrate’s court yesterday in connection with a charge of assaulting motorist, Jude Ward, on January 18 last year.

Mtshali’s trial was postponed until February 17 to enable him to brief an advocate to represent him.

The charge sheet alleges that Mtshali pushed Ward to the floor of the Camperdown police station on the day in question, placed his knee on her back and hit her forehead on the floor.

The assault allegedly took place after Mtshali pursued Ward along the N3 highway to the police station.

Mtshali laid counter charges of failing to obey a traffic officer and inconsiderate driving against Ward whose trial began late last year.

Ward’s advocate, Christo van Schalkwyk said at the conclusion of the evidence on December 23 that he intends to bring an application for Ward’s discharge when the case resumes on February 11.
