Assault case: PMB advocate in court

2010-11-09 00:00

PIETERMARITZBURG advocate Cameron Hunt SC is awaiting the outcome of representations to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) in the case in which he is charged with assaulting fellow advocate Mergen Chetty at a function on June 11.

Hunt appeared briefly before regional magistrate Fred de Beer yesterday.

The case was adjourned until December 17 pending a response by the DPP to Hunt’s representations.

De Beer yesterday also withdrew a warrant of arrest which had been issued against Hunt — the operation of which was stayed — on September 30 when Hunt failed to appear in court in response to a summons.

Hunt maintained he had arranged not to appear in court on that day as he was involved in a high court trial.

De Beer said yesterday that Hunt had come to see him in his chambers in connection with the matter, which was “sorted out satisfactorily”.

Hunt faces a charge of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, arising from an incident at a farewell function for newly appointed Judge Rob Griffiths and to celebrate the first World Cup football match.

The charge sheet alleges that Hunt’s wife, Penny, had poured alcohol over Chetty’s head.

Chetty allegedly rushed from the room and on his return swore at Penny, telling her never to do that to him again.

Hunt is then alleged to have punched Chetty twice on the jaw in quick succession, causing him to fall to the tiled floor where he lay unconscious for several minutes.
