Assmang deaths: NPA under fire

2012-04-18 00:00

THE National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has come under union fire for failing to decide whether to prosecute management at Assmang for the deaths of six workers in a 2008 furnace explosion.

The incident happened at the company’s Cato Ridge plant.

The Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu) in KwaZulu-Natal said yesterday it had been several years since the NPA promised to act on the matter, but little progress had been achieved.

“As Cosatu KZN, we are to seek a meeting with the NPA so as to understand the real reason behind this blatant act of injustice,” Cosatu said in a statement yesterday.

“It is our sincere belief that this is a true case of the principle of ‘justice delayed is justice denied’,” the trade union added.

Last year, Assmang installed a new control centre worth more than R100 million for its furnaces in a move that the company said would significantly reduce the risk of a fatal explosion.
