Astrology: a hindu perspective

2011-10-03 00:00

THE Navagraha Maha Yaagam or Hindu prayers for the planets, was held at the Siva Sobramoniar and Marriammen temples this past Saturday. Followers believe that if they perform special rituals towards the deities of the planets, that the hardship that they are undergoing can be reduced.

For more than 5 000 years Hindus have been consulting their local priest to find out what the planets have in store for them when they have an important decision to make. This could be around matters related to birth, a wedding, death, moving to a new home, purchasing a car or starting a business.

The priest will go through the Panjakum (Indian alamanac), and advise whether the planets are in a favourable position to undertake the desired venture.

According to the local high priest at the Siva Soobramoniar and Marriammen temples, V. V. Visvanathan Gurrakal: “All the creatures in the universe, including nature, are controlled by the planets in the zodiac system, and their activities could change the entire movement of these elements.

“The sun god is the most powerful, and governs all other planets. The moon reflects the rays of the sun in a cool way through the surface. The positions and the combination of all the planets create relevant changes in the life of a human being. A person who is mentally affected by some means is described as a “lunatic” — lunar means moon,” says Gurrukal.

Astrologers calculate the movements of these planets, and predict the effects of them on the Earth. 2011 was predicted as a year of many natural disasters, as has been witnessed.
