Athletes complain over ‘stink’

ATHLETES who stayed at the University of Zululand for the Kwanaloga Games have called the residential blocks “dirty and improper” and say there was a lack of security.

The event organisers deny the charges.

The annual Kwanaloga Games, at which 11 local government districts in KZN compete, ended yesterday. They were hosted by uThungulu District Municipality in Richards Bay from Friday.

A report in iLanga said teams which stayed at the Joe Slovo Block P residence alleged the residence stinks and is in a poor state of repair.

They also alleged an attempted rape and break-in took place between Saturday and Sunday.

Kwanaloga Games project manager Vusi Mazibuko and Kwanaloga local organising committee member Robert Mkhize, who is also an iMfolozi councillor, said the accusations are unfounded.

No related case has been opened with the police.

Mazibuko said the organisers conducted an investigation at the residence and found nothing out of order.

“We did an investigation and found that the allegations were not true.

“As for the cleanliness, a cleaning service was provided for all the areas.

“We cannot be held responsible if these people can’t clean after themselves,” he said.

Mazibuko said district municipal team leaders chose their own accommodation.

“… There were some teams who required our assistance, but if the accommodation is not of the expected standard, the teams must not blame Kwanaloga.”
