Athletics: Collegians Harriers to host KZN cross-country league tomorrow

THE next of the KwaZulu-Natal cross-country leagues takes place tomorrow and will be hosted by Collegians Harriers in Pietermaritzburg.

Proceedings commence at their Boschoff Street clubhouse at noon. Les Burnard has more details at 082 336 7244.

Cross-country league, hosted by CKS, is back on. After further negotiations with the university management, the Francois Road venue has been secured and the event is to take place on Saturday, May 8.

Runners are reminded that application forms to be part of the Comrades Runners’ Village are available at the KZNA offices during office hours.

The Sport and Recreation Department has once again sponsored the village project, which gives athletes from under-privileged areas the chance to travel and be accommodated before the Comrades Marathon.

To qualify, runners must earn less than R2 000 per month or be unemployed, live at least 100 km from Durban, and should have qualified in a marathon fas­ter than two hours 45 minutes (three hours 15 minutes for wo­men).

Last week KZN Athletics held their 21,1 km championships in conjunction with the Foskor 21 km in Richards Bay. The provincial age category Champions and medal winners were:

Senior Men: Thubalethu Phaku, Simon Mkhonza and Moses Sitsang.

Women: Jenna Challenor, Danielle Adlam and Melanie Van Rooyen.

35-39 Men: Justice Nkosi, Cornelius Pretorius and Bhekumuzi Sithole.

Women: Izelle Geyser, Maria Mthembu and Shelly Geel.

40-44 Men: Mbongiseni Jiyane, Sbusiso Ntuli and Amos Nkosi.

Women: Tholakele Sgubudu, Berveley Swaart and Charmaine Schmidt.

45-49 Men: Lungsani Mthembu.

Women: Erika van der Spuy.

50-54 Men: Simphiwe Ntenteza, Chico Subramanie and Simon Chiliza,

Women: Julie Jennings, Theresa Muller and Elize Cilliers.

55-59 Men: Carl Roestoff.

Women: Denise Strydom.

60+ Men: Michael Langa, Petros Shumi and Samuel Masondo.

Junior Men: Senzo Mtshali, Qiniso Mathenjwa and Andries Jacobus.

Women: Nadia Groenewald.
