Atkins names Inland U19s to face Free State

2011-11-25 00:00

PAUL Atkins, the KZN Inland Cricket Union’s schools and coaches co-ordinator and Inland U19 coach, has named his side to play Free State U19 in the Cricket SA U19 Three-day Competition at Hilton College from today to Sunday.

Atkins told The Witness yesterday, “A number of players are unavailable due to exams, but this squad will be intent on producing a good performance.”

Inland will be captained by SA U19 all-rounder Calvin Savage of Maritzburg College.

Atkins said preparing for the game has been a problem. “We were meant to practise last Friday and it rained, and now it’s raining again,” he said. “We picked the team in a different manner this season via a talent identification process, so in a sense the trial period was more efficient.”

Players who would have come into the reckoning, but were unavailable due to exams are Matt Ford, Dean Robinson and Vaughn Moses of St Charles, Jason Shield of Hilton College and Fezile Memela of Maritzburg College.

Atkins has a number of U17 players in the squad, which augurs well.

“With the timing of the competition not ideal, exams are always a problem … what would be good preparation for the premier SA schools event, Coke Week, is not possible.”

Atkins’s team did well last season, winning two and drawing one match, and this season the Inland U19 team are scheduled to play KZN Coastal at DHS Old Boys from December 1 to 3. Their final game is against Griqualand West at the Maritzburg Oval from January 19 to 21.

Inland Premier League players are putting their feet up again on Sunday as the Dolphins play the Warriors at the PMB Oval.
