Attack: IFP hopeful critical in hospital

2011-05-18 00:00

THE Inkatha Freedom Party said yesterday that one of its candidates for today’s elections is in a critical condition in hospital after being assaulted yesterday morning.

IFP national organiser Albert Mncwango said in a statement the attack on Godfrey Mahlobo — who will be contesting Ward 17 of Ndwedwe Local Municipality in the Ilembe District — has been reported to the SA Police Force and is under investigation.

“The IFP condemns this brutal attack on its candidate, which has an obvious political motive, and urges the SAPF to investigate the assault speedily.”

He said his party has urged the law enforcement agencies to prevent similar attacks and ensure that today’s elections are free of intimidation and violence.

“We have committed ourselves to free and fair elections and we expect all other political parties that are contesting these elections to do their part in ensuring that they are peaceful,” said Mncwango.
